PORTFOLIO
This photo was taken at Tabor Academy. The strongest parts of this photo are the leading lines and lighting. Together they create a captivating composition. The leading lines created by the edges of the dock lead you to the center of the photo where the focal point is created by the lighting. Another captivating element of the photo that helps the stronger elements is the foreground middle ground background. The lighting in the foreground is very dark and fades into a lighter middle ground and right at the center of the photo the light becomes very direct almost creating a spotlight on the boat at the end of the dock. This effect created by the lighting and leading lines draws the viewers eyes to the center of the photo. The lighting also created dramatic colors in the water by creating interesting shadows in the water. The background lighting is also intriguing. The sun is directly shining on the water, boats, and trees in the background. The lighting is very affective at creating a focal point of the photo and mood. The photo gives off a calm and relaxed feeling as it leads you to a happy and warm feeling in the middle.
This photo was taken on block island. The subject matter is the lighthouse. What makes the subject matter interesting is the contrast of the beautiful building against the dark gloomy sky and dreary dark green bushes. It creates a interesting composition of something innocent and purse out of its element in something dark and evil. Other elements that make it a string photo are the leading lines created by the sand path, and the dramatic contrast of colors throughout the composition. The contrast of the light tan path and the dark green shrubs on either side make you focus on the path which leads your eye to the lighthouse, the focal point. The color contrast between the light gray sky and the dark green shrubs gives the viewer something to compare visually. Lastly the photo has amazing texture in both the shuns and the sky. The bushes have a very rigid and ruffley feeling where the sky has a wavy and fluffy texture. Overall the picture has many contrasting elements but contrasts that work in a way to lead the viewer into its strengths.
This photo was taken in class near the sink by the window. The photo was created using props including a toy car and a set of mirrors. The two mirrors were placed on the sink facing each other with the car in the middle to create a non-ending repetition of reflections. So it is clear to say the greatest compositional element of the picture is the reflections created by the continuous cycle in the mirrors. Another element of the photo that makes it strong is the color contrast. The toy car creates a pop of color against the white sink. Another reflection was also captured in the background of the photo, of the camera and hand that took the photo. Also the photo has interesting leading lines. The lines create a triangles that point toward the center of the photo. The lines create a somewhat carousel setting that gives the composition a sense of motion. Ironically the cars create a circular path like a racetrack and the subject matter just so happens to be a car. This photo is a very different and unusual photo that captures the viewers eye.
This picture was taken at Tabor Academy near the docks next to the dorms. The picture has captivating leading lines created by the edges of the dock and the railings of the bridge leading onto the deck. These lines lead not quite to the center of the photo, but to the focal point of the composition which is the boats at the end of the dock. The son creates a direct been of light on the boats making the boats gleam and shine very bright, catching the viewers eyes. The leading lines not only lead the viewers eyes but created interesting shapes including rectangles and triangles. This photo also has a shallow depth of field which makes only parts of the photo in focus. In this photo the only element of the photo that is in focus is the pole and railing in the foreground. The viewers eye goes to the wooden pole first and then to the railing which leads it to the boats. So in the case of this photo the focus is very effective in creating an interesting composition that leads the viewers eye around the photo.
This picture was taken outside in my backyard. The photo was taken mid-day when the sun was semi bright in the sky but not enormously bright. The greatest strength of this photo was the contrast of colors. The bright pink provides a pop of color against the green leaves that fill the background. The shallow depth of field allows only the flower to be in focus. The focus therefore compliments the color contrast by focusing strongly on the flower and blurring the green background, making the color contrast stronger. Due to the shallow depth of field, the different areas of focus, the photo creates different textures in the photo. The flower which is in focus has a very rigid sharp and rough texture, while the green leaves of the background have a soft smooth and delicate feel due to the blur. Together they create an overall mood of tranquility and peacefulness.
This picture was taken in the greenhouse in the school courtyard. It was one of the first good photos I took, composition wise, in this class. What makes this photo interesting is the point of view. The lines and shapes are very clearly defined and catch the viewer’s eyes, but the point of view is harder to decipher. The viewer has to look deeper at the photo to realize that it is a greenhouse (well except for you because I just told you it was a greenhouse). The angle the photo was taken at gives the lines a sense of motion as they lead the viewer’s eyes to the corners of the photo. The contrast of the blue windows and the black lines created by the frame of the greenhouse give the photo great definition. Another element of this photo that has great definition is the streak of light at the bottom of the composition. Also, the entire photo is in focus because every element of the photo gives it strength.
